Many kidney tumours are now found incidentally during ultrasound, CT or MRI performed for another reason. In localised disease, surgery is often an important curative treatment.
Is every kidney mass malignant?
No. Imaging can often estimate the nature of a lesion with reasonable confidence, but additional tests or a biopsy may be considered in selected cases.
When is surgery needed?
The decision depends on tumour size, growth, location, age, other medical conditions and kidney function. Not every small kidney tumour requires immediate surgery.
What is kidney-sparing surgery?
During a partial nephrectomy, only the tumour and an oncologically appropriate margin are removed while as much healthy kidney tissue as possible is preserved.
When is the whole kidney removed?
For larger or unfavourably positioned tumours, or when a substantial part of the kidney is involved, radical nephrectomy may be the safer option. The aim is appropriate cancer treatment rather than the smallest possible operation at any cost.
Are there alternatives to surgery?
For some small tumours, particularly in older patients or those with significant comorbidity, active surveillance or ablative treatment may be considered. In advanced disease, systemic oncology treatment may become the main focus.
Robot-assisted kidney surgery
Robotic technology may be particularly useful during kidney-sparing surgery, where precise tumour excision and reconstruction of the kidney are both important.

Frequently asked questions
Does a kidney tumour always mean the whole kidney must be removed?
No. Partial nephrectomy is possible in many cases, but feasibility depends on the tumour's anatomical and oncological characteristics.
Why are the original CT or MRI images important?
For surgical planning, the images themselves show the relationship of the tumour to the kidney, blood vessels and collecting system in more detail than the written report alone.
Does robotic surgery guarantee kidney preservation?
No. The robot is a precise surgical tool; kidney preservation depends primarily on tumour characteristics and oncological safety.
